POSITION OVERVIEW:
Under the direction of the Senior Director of interpretation, the Director of Interpretive Development is responsible for the research, development, and implementation of interpretive programming and manuals. Review and update interpretive policies and procedures based on best practices and current guidelines outlined by the American Alliance of Museums and the American Association of State and Local History.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interpretive Program Development
• Oversee the development and implementation of themed programs, workshops, and special event interpretation in collaboration with Event Managers and Interpretation Managers.
• Delegate tasks and projects to Interpretation Managers based on their areas of expertise and organizational priorities, setting clear expectations and deadlines.
• Utilize evaluation data to identify new areas of program research and development.

Interpretive Training and Management
• Manage and oversee the daily work of 20+ seasonal historical interpreters, providing work direction, constructive feedback, training and other management support.
• Provide regular and constructive feedback to Interpretive staff to ensure that all programs are being delivered to a high level of excellence.
• Respond to inquiries from frontline staff regarding research needs and program development.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Undergraduate- or graduate-level degree in History, Public History, or Museum Studies.
• 3+ years of experience in museum education, interpretive programming, or museum interpretation.
• Ability to develop a working knowledge of New York state history and specific knowledge of nineteenth-century U.S. social and cultural history.

Desired Qualifications:
• 5+ years of experience in historical research, interpretive program development, or museum education.
• Experience in staff supervision, mentoring, and developing and implementing staff training.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary: The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $54,000-$57,000 annually. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
