About the Institution

The National Bottle Museum houses over 4000 antique bottles, and presents the history of the bottle-making industry, one of America’s first major industries, and the changes in bottle-making technology over time. Our mission is to explore the economic and cultural impact of the bottle industry through education, preservation, research, and exhibition of bottles and related objects.

Job Description:

The Director will serve as the leader of the National Bottle Museum and manage day-to-day operations. This individual will ensure that widely held museum and public history best practices are followed in the care and stewardship of collections. All matters related to the museum’s operations and strategic priorities, including the care and maintenance of the museum building and collections, are a part of the position. The Director has a clear vision for the museum's future. The qualified candidate has excellent leadership, development and project management skills. The Director is the museum's ambassador to the public and has a good grasp of American history and its social movements, so that he/she can promote the educational goals of the museum. The Director will report directly to the Board of Trustees. This is a part-time, on-site position with regular weekend and occasional evening hours.

 

Responsibilities:
Is the face of the National Bottle Museum, and represents the museum in the community, online, and beyond.

  • Assumes day-to-day cash management responsibilities for the organization and works with the Treasurer.
  • Assists the board in implementing the strategic long-range plan in order to realize agency’s mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Develops and oversees educational programs that connect the history of the bottle industry to national and local history, in cooperation with local historical societies and other community groups.
  • Performs docent duties.
  • Oversees recruitment and training of volunteers.
  • Must be willing to research and write grants and assist at fundraising events.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and appearance of the museum and ensures a welcoming environment for museum visitors
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as required/directed by the Board of Trustees

 

Qualifications

  1. A degree in Business Administration or History preferred, must have a minimum of two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. The ideal candidate will have experience working in a museum environment or working with historic collections.
  2. Must be computer literate with experience in Microsoft Office Suite (particularly Word, Excel, and Publisher), Outlook, and Zoom. Graphic design skills and familiarity with Canva are a plus.
  3. Must be able to communicate clearly, effectively, and accurately in both oral and written communications.
  4. Commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in all aspects of museum operations.
