About this Opportunity

The QBG Farm grows fruits and vegetables with a focus on soil health and care, without the use of synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Crops harvested are 90-100% donated to emergency food relief. The Farm Manager will be responsible for preparing, planting and maintaining a 1-acre farm using exclusively organic methods. This position will report directly to the Director of Programs. The position oversees volunteers and interns on the farm, oversight and implementation of crop production, maintenance of farm infrastructure and as well as supporting the use of the farm by other QBG programs.

Responsibilities: 

  • Perform all labor necessary to maintain the farm per botanical garden standards in addition to all labor relative to crop production and soil management.
  • Maintain crops with priority of donation to food relief efforts.
  • Manage relationships and coordinate donations of produce to local food pantries.
  • Supervise part time staff to providing farm operations and education support.
  • Facilitate farm access to the public via farm open hours, tours and farm stand.
  • Lead farm workshops; conduct tours.
  • Oversee all elements of intern program, from onboarding to scheduling to curriculum development; work with other volunteer groups.
  • Collaborate with Director of Programs and other departments to initiate and implement new programming, especially for young people in the areas of urban agriculture.
  • Do research for grant opportunities and collaborate with development team.
  • Manage farm operations, including current programing.
  • Initiative new programming on Farm site, in collaboration with other departments.
  • Maintain orderly records of crops, purchases, and other farm related data.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Manage budget and be able to document progress.
  • Maintain “Standard Operating Procedures” for a safe, efficient farm operation.
  • Maintain equipment and farm structures and repair damaged structures on Farm.
  • Maintain inventory of equipment and tools.
  • Provide technical assistance for Children’s Garden if needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Agriculture or related field or equivalent agricultural sciences certificate/ course work or three years hands-on applicable experience including at least one farm growing season
  • Strong farming skills, including a knowledge of organic farming practices, composting and integrated pest management
  • Experience in education, supervising, mentoring or coaching
  • Excellent communication, inter-personal skills and experience interfacing with the public
  • Ability to move 50+ lbs
  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons
  • Team player, creative, organized, enthusiastic
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work alone and in groups
  • Strong work ethic
  • Basic carpentry skills
  • Basic knowledge of MS office and other basic computer skills
  • Bilingual, Spanish or Chinese, preferred
  • Valid driver’s license with willingness and ability to drive large vehicles

Schedule:

This is a full-time, exempt position with weekly on-site work. Schedule is generally Monday through Friday, with occasional required weekends.

Salary Range:   $60,000 – 66,000
