Position Title: Director of Marketing and Communications 

Reports to: Vice President of Operations 

Position Type: Full-time; weekdays, with evenings and weekends as business requires.
 

WHO WE ARE: 

Genesee Country Village & Museum, located outside of Rochester, NY, is the country’s third largest living history museum and includes a nature center and art gallery. GCV&M is implementing a new strategic plan as we move towards our 50th anniversary in 2026 that marks an exciting new chapter in the evolution of the Museum as a more engaging, relevant, and sustainable community asset and attraction.
 

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Director of Marketing and Communications manages all marketing, public relations, digital engagement, and branding programs for the Museum. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to directly impact the Museum’s growth and success.
 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Marketing and Public Relations  

  • In partnership with senior leadership, determine the overall voice and message of the Museum. 
  • Work proactively and collaboratively with the Museum’s programming teams to identify themes and unique attributes to position the Museum in the marketplace. 
  • Lead the development of a strategic, multi-channel marketing plan to increase public awareness of the Museum as a destination, community resource, and educational center. Plan, execute, and manage strategies designed to grow and attract new audiences. Evaluate and report on results and adjust efforts to achieve goals.  
  • Project manage graphic design, video, photography, and other creative services for the Museum. Responsible for developing processes and managing deliverables. 
  • Oversee content and tone for the Museum website and social media efforts. 
  • Serve as the central media relations point person for the Museum. Pitch story ideas and send press releases to internal and external contacts to attract earned media. Organize and host media visits. 

Administration, Management, and Community Engagement  

  • Write and manage the Marketing and Communications annual operating budget. 
  • Manage an on-retainer outside marketing/PR consultant, 20 hour/week communications assistant, annual intern, and stable of freelancers and vendors. 
  • Organize and inform the work of the Marketing Committee of the Museum’s Board. 
  • Represent the Museum in various capacities, including community initiatives, Visit Rochester monthly meetings, and local and regional conferences  
  • Serve as back-up support to the Director of IT, troubleshooting user and network issues. 
  • Support the Museum's fundraising efforts by working with the Development Team. 
  • Enforce the Museum’s current brand identity; develop and provide brand templates and tools for staff use. 

Desired Qualifications:

  • College degree and minimum of five years of work experience in a related field 
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing integrated multi-channel marketing plans 
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills 
  • Strong organizational skills that reflect ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks with excellent attention to detail 
  • Strong social media skills, with a broad knowledge of various platforms and their uses, particularly Facebook and Instagram as well as practice in collecting and reporting on social media analytics 
  • Proficiency as both a user and an administrator in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point and Publisher), various social media platforms and website content management systems 
  • Strong collaborator with knack for build relationships and guiding peers in a way that builds trust and engagement  
  • Demonstrated proactive approaches to problem-solving with strong decision-making capability 
  • Experience and interest in museums and/or non-profits and internal and external communications, marketing and fundraising 

SALARY AND BENEFITS: 

Salary: The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $60,000-$65,000 annually. Where a successful candidate’s actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including, for example, the candidate's qualifications, specific skills, and experience.
