Position Summary:

The Cayuga Museum of History and Art in Auburn, NY has long been a favorite historic site for the vibrant community of Cayuga County. Since 1936 the museum has been open and today, the museum operates through three separate historic buildings. The museum's unique mission of art, history, and science shapes everything we do, from public programs to exhibitions.

 

The Museum is seeking a creative and enthusiastic individual to join our team as the Museum Educator. This part-time position is currently funded for March through December 2025, with the primary goal of coordinating and expanding our youth and family education programs which include field trips, after school programs, summer camps and tours.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

School programs:

  • Coordinate and enhance the Museum’s field trip program.
  • Develop and manage new after school program.
  • Evaluate and improve program content and delivery based on feedback and best practices.
  • Manage school program budget.

Summer camps:

  • Manage all aspects of collaborative summer camp including volunteers.
  • Develop and manage all aspects of new summer camp.

Community outreach:

  • Coordinate and enhance Mobile Museum program.
  • Manage other outreach activities including summer rec program.
  • Coordinate and enhance Creative Explorers programming, including development of hands-on activities and workshops that align with the Museum’s mission and target audience.

Visitor services:

  • Conduct tours of the Case Research Laboratory.
  • Interact with museum visitors and be conversant in the Museum’ mission, exhibit, collections and programs.
  • Assist with creating tours for different age groups and educational levels.
  • Assist with staffing the Museum’s front desk, introducing the Museum to visitors and operating the Museum Store in accordance with proper cash handling procedures.

 

 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage with teachers, administrators, and program participants.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of educational practices and curriculum standards.
  • Familiarity with evaluation and assessment techniques to measure program impact.
  • Proficiency in using technology for program management and record-keeping.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, museum studies, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Demonstrated experience working in an educational or museum setting, preferably with a focus on youth programming.
  • Customer service experience preferred.
  • Weekend and evening availability required.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to use personal vehicle for outreach programs and events.
  • Requires moderate physical activity. Climbing stairs is necessary. Occasional lifting of supplies and materials less than 40 pounds.

Additional Details:

This is a part-time position that is currently funded from March-December 2025 and is paid $20/hour. Personal time, holidays, and sick time are included.

Employment Dates: March 4 – December 27, 2025 (Dates can be relatively flexible)

Schedule: 20 hours per week, Tuesday – Saturday, some evenings required, with the exact schedule

determined monthly based on program schedule.
