The Tour & Interpretation Coordinator (TIC) is responsible for acting as lead researcher and author of the historical interpretations, guided tours, and other educational programs. The TIC is also responsible for the training and management of part-time seasonal Tour Guide staff and volunteers. The TIC reports to the Director of Public Programming, and works with the Public Programming department to devise and implement tours, events, and public programs.
Responsibilities:
- Research, write, and edit tour interpretations, including guided tours, the Historic Huguenot Street (HHS) app walking tours, and special topic tours
- Recruit, hire, train, and conduct performance evaluations for all Tour Guides and volunteers
- Responsible for giving the regular guided tour to the general public 2-3 days a week
- Lead guided tour experience/visits for high-level guests, Board members, consultants, etc.
- Participate in Educational Programming Committee (EPC) and Interpretive and Strategic Planning Committee meetings, as needed
- Collaborate with Director of Public Programming, EPC, Scholarly Advisory Board, and other HHS advisors to create inclusive and progressive educational programs, and participate in long term interpretive planning
- Assist with event planning; including marketing, scheduling, and increasing revenue & attendance numbers for annual community events
- Conduct group tours and special topic tours, as needed
- Assist Buildings and Grounds department with opening, securing, and closing historic structures and offices, and reporting any problems on site
- Assist Curatorial department with various research projects
- Assist Youth & Family Programs Coordinator with school program activities as needed
- Assist Retail & Reservations Specialist with Visitor Center/Museum Shop related duties, including running the Point-of-Sale system, managing ticket sales and registration, promoting memberships and donations, and providing excellent customer service
- Be familiar with National Museum Ethics, Standards, and Best Practices
- Promote HHS programs and job opportunities at off-site locations, such as SUNY New Paltz volunteer and job fairs, events at other historic sites/museums, etc.
- Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with each department, HHS members, supporters, advisors, and volunteers
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in History, Public History, Museum Studies, or related field
- A strong background in historical research and writing
- Ability to memorize and contextualize information from a script
- Experience in managing teams
- Experience and/or training in museum management/visitor experience
- Ability to engage and educate individuals of all ages and backgrounds
- Ease with public speaking responsibilities is highly desired
- Ability to work collaboratively on creative projects
- Must be able to walk the length of the site, climb stairs, set up chairs and tables for events
- Must possess a valid Driver License, and have reliable transportation.
Wages, hours, and benefits:
This is a full-time, non-exempt (hourly) position that reports to the Director of Public Programming and supervises a staff of approximately 5-7 part-time, seasonal tour guides/volunteers. Hours are 9am-5pm, Monday – Friday with occasional evening/weekend hours for special events and deadlines.
