About Great Camp Sagamore

Great Camp Sagamore is a 17-acre National Historic Landmark and is one of the first of the nationally renowned Adirondack “Great Camps,” located in one of the most remote areas of the Adirondack Park. Today, Great Camp Sagamore is owned, preserved, and operated by Sagamore Institute of the Adirondacks (SIA). We are an educational, private, non-profit institution dedicated to stewarding Great Camp Sagamore as a welcoming place for educational and recreational programs and fostering connections to history, nature, and community.

Sagamore welcomes guests from late May through late October and on two separate days during the winter. Guests come from around the world to take tours, participate in overnight and day experiences, attend conferences, get married, host family reunions, and enjoy concerts.

At Great Camp Sagamore, all employees help to facilitate camp offerings. In addition to one’s job-specific duties, other tasks may be assigned, as needed, to support camp operations for the employee’s department or other camp departments. 

 

Position Description

The Main Office at Great Camp Sagamore serves as the check-in location for overnight guests, a go-to for questions during their stay, the main point of contact for external inquiries, and a hub for staff communication. We are seeking two (2) responsible and personable Guest Services Agents to interact with guests, perform routine office tasks, field phone and email inquiries, and assist in inter-department operations.

General responsibilities of the Guest Services Agent include:

  • Engaging with guests over the phone, email, and in-person to answer questions and provide appropriate service
  • Greeting, checking-in, and briefly orienting overnight guests when they arrive at camp
  • Properly and responsibly communicating rates, creating reservations, processing payments, and upholding financial policies
  • Occasionally sell beer, wine, hard cider, and toiletries from the Main Office
  • Reconciling the cash drawer on a daily and weekly basis
  • Swiftly communicating with the Kitchen, Housekeeping regarding updates to guest numbers
  • Performing routine room checks prior to check-in
  • Occasionally assisting the Programs Department with planning and set-up of meeting spaces
  • Assisting the Operations Manager and other year-round staff with office-related tasks as needed
  • Generating reports regarding dining numbers, check-ins, and new reservations
  • Making detailed notes regarding guest interactions and reservations when required

This role is ideal for someone with previous customer service and/or office experience, a positive attitude, and strong organization skills. Because of the nature of the office’s functions, the Guest Services Agent must be independent, comfortable interacting with guests in person and over the phone, and flexible. There are often emergent and/or numerous tasks to be performed without disrupting routine operations.

This position reports to the Operations Manager and also works with the Sagamore’s Programs Department and Finance Manager. This position runs from June through mid-October. The standard work schedule is eight hours per day, five days per week. Days off are arranged so that employees have two days off.

 

Preferred Skills and Experiences 

  • Previous experience in customer service and/or hospitality is preferred, but not required
  • Strong, professional communication skills, including responding on-the-spot to unique guest needs
  • Strong organizational and record-keeping skills, including attention to detail
  • Strong computer skills, including Google Drive, Docs, and Sheets
  • Experience with Square POS and/or FareHarbor is preferred, but not required
  • A positive attitude and strong work ethic that suits the nature of working at Great Camp Sagamore
  • First Aid and CPR certification is preferred, but not required

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to lift and carry 30lbs
  • Ability to sit for long periods of time
  • Ability to walk up and down 2 flights of stairs
  • Ability to traverse gravel roads/paths and uneven terrain at least ½ mile per day

When off duty, staff have access to the camp’s facilities and amenities, including the Boat House canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards, and access to the 12 miles of foot trails adjacent to the property. Staff receive a discount in the Gift Shop, and staff members’ friends and extended family members may enjoy tours, meals, and overnight accommodations at reduced costs.
